In Pori Jazz 1972 played Umeå Big Band with trombonist Slide Hampton.

Thanks to UBB’s trumpetist Alf Burstedt, I was able to name all the players in the pictures. Alf wrote to me: “Umeå Big Band don´t exist today, but some of the musicians are still playing in other bands. Our Jazz grand old man Lars Lystedt, 87 years, is still going strong and plays his trombone.” – Unfortunately I did not take a picture of Lars Lysted – or Alf.

All the players of the band in 1972 are listed here.

Slide Hampton has made at least one LP with UBB: “Umeå Big Band ‎– Slide Hampton In Montreux“, released 1971.

Stockholm archipelago houses

Cruising in the archipelago of Stockholm is a beautiful experience. The houses on on the islands – often second or summer homes – are all exceptionally well-kept. If you don’t mind that we tourists in the big ships are passing your hide-away a couple of times every day, this is the place to be.

So now it’s time for you to choose our cruise operator: Tallink Silja or Viking Line? When on board, and if the weather is nice, go to the open top deck of the ship and enjoy the views.

Sakura in Stockholm

Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, has turned to mini Japan two days ago: the cherry trees are blossoming (also called sakura) splendidly in Kungsträgården, one of the central parks of the city. We were lucky to see this as the blossom will last only a few days.

Porin Hotelli Otava valmistui 1857 ja toimi hotellina ja ravintolana aina vuoteen 1985 asti. Lopettaessaan Hotelli Otava oli Suomen vanhin yhtäjaksoisesti toiminnassa ollut hotelli-ravintola. Sen suunnitteli arkkitehti C. J. von Heidekenin uusrenessanssiseen tyyliin. (Lähde: Wikipedia)

Hotel Otava in Pori, Finland has been an central building for over 150 years in Pori. It was used as an office and concert venue for Pori Jazz Festival until mid 1980′s. Today it is an office building.

Kun skannasin 1970-luvulla Porin jatseista ottamieni kuvien negatiiveja (jotka nyt ovat Jazz & Pop Arkiston JAPAn hallussa), tuli vastaan kuva Hotelli Otavasta. Se oli Porin Jazzien alusta 1966 alkaen sen keskeisiä rakennuksia ja yksi tärkeistä esiintymispaikoista. Oheinen kuva on heinäkuulta 1976, jolloin siellä esiintyi juhlien vakiotrumpetistin Ted Cursonin lisäksi muun muassa Herbie Hancock ja US Army Big Band.

Kun haeskelin lisää tietoa rakennuksesta internetistä, löysin täsmälleen samasta kuvakulmasta otetut kuvat 50 vuotta aiemmin ja 40 vuotta myöhemmin.

Hotelli Otava, Pori, 1976

Vuodet ovat kohdelleet Hotelli Otavaa ulkoisesti hyvin. Se on säilyttänyt vanhan asunsa oikein mukavasti. Nykyään rakennus on toimistotiloina muun muassa Porin kaupungin käytössä. Viime vuoden aikana heräsi halu palauttaa Hotelli Otava uudelleen kulttuurin käyttöön.

The new office buildings offer often a good opportunity for the high dynamic range (HDR) photography. I took these pictures in Ruoholahti, Helsinki. The building is HTC Helsinki, made of strikingly red and blue elements.
