“Our neighbours themselves do not clearly know the happiness of this Republic. At a distance, they only know us by name. Thus obscure to others we live as celebrities to ourselves, and, whilst others believe us to be wretched and miserable, we live content and comfortable together.”
This was quoted in a book “A freak of freedom, or, The Republic of San Marino” by J. Theodore Bent year 1879 (link to pdf), originally written by Zuccoli early 17th century.
I haven’t been in San Marino, but how tempting it would be to see if we could still, after 400 years, find some hiding, shy celebrities there, in one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites.
