The symmetry of the National Library of Finland

The National Library of Finland, previously Helsinki University library, is a beautiful, seemingly small library, designed by renowned architect C. L. Engel. What we visitors can not see are the over hundred thousand meters of bookshelves underground.

Studies are showing that we humans like symmetrical bodies. Does the same apply to buildings and architecture?

Judge yourself.  Here are some symmetrial pictures of our beautiful National Library in Helsinki. (Click the picture to see them larger.)

A classical masterpiece, indeed! Not enhanced by the rather depressingly bare forecourt. I gather drainage isn’t a problem, having five subterranean floors. What a fine photograph it is looking down from under the cupola to the floors beneath. Reminiscent of the interior of the New york Guggenheim. Since seeing your photographs, I regret never having visited Helsinki.

Very nice building. Simple and secure from the outside. Beautiful and meaningful, once you get in. Very, very nice impressions! Cheers, Andreas
