Meeri Koutaniemi, the undisputed winner of Finnish Press Photography 2012

This year there is one winner over the others in Finnish press photographer society. Meeri Koutaniemi won six out of ten series in the annual Press Photos of the Year 2012 contest.

20130326-G15-2204If you are still in Helsinki, you have the opportunity to see her work in two different exhibitions. The first show is in Korjaamo (a tram workshop turned to a museum and a galleria), where Koutaniemi’s work about HIV carriers in Mexico is shown still a few days until 24th of April.

The second exhibition is in the Finnish Museum of Photography, where 11-Collective is presented in Process Space. Meeri Koutaniemi is one of the eleven members of the collective.

Koutaniemi’s award winning work of the six refugees in Finland with different human status is shown also in the Process Space.

You have to open the ‘official’ red binders to see her pictures and related material. That makes you to stop, read, look and think – very effective work of art.

The exhibition in the Photography Museum is open until 19th of May.

But does Meeri Koutaniemi intentionally look like Frida Kahlo? Or does the portrait photographer Outi Pyhäranta make her look like Frida? They are like twins …

Here are two pictures I have shamelessly copied for comparison: Meeri from Helsingin Sanomat and Frida’s self-portrait. You can be the judge …
