Jazz Q from Praque in Pori Jazz 1972

Martin Kratochvíl (b. 1946) is a Czech jazz musician, doctor of philosophy and a businessman – not the most common combination for a jazz pianist. In 1964 he established Jazz Q, which during the communist era before 1989 was one of the symbols of the resistance in Czechoslovakia. After 1989 Kratochvíl has been more active on the business, though Jazz Q reunited once during early 2000’s.

In Finland Pori Jazz festival 1972 Jazz Q had three gigs. I took these pictures in Yhteislyseo school on 15 July and Kirjurinluoto park on 16 July. This was probably the only time the band has be performing in Finland.

Your post and photos were the best Cristmas gift for me! I wish you all the best, warmest regards Nina Vrbovcová

    • I’m sorry to hear what happened to Michal. Still, this is the best feedback I can get, thanks Nina! I’m truly glad that you found my blog and the picture of late Michal. This was the first and only time I have published these Jazz Q pictures. – I wish you all good.

I played with Michal in one band in 1985, still remember him very well. And later with his colleague Libor Laun, he also passed away a years ago. The Jazz Q were one of my favorite bands in the 70s, simply a great time with a great music!
