Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years on Robben Island

South-African anti-apartheid fighter and Nobel prized politician Nelson Mandela celebrates his 95th birthday today, July 18th. He is currently hospitalized due to recurring lung infection, in critical but stable condition.

Mandela was held as a political prisoner on Robben Island from 1964 to 1982. The island, which is 7 km west of Cape Town, has already from the late 17th century been used for the isolation of politically unwanted persons, for leper colony and animal quarantine station. Today it is one of the main tourist attractions of Cape Town.
