Red Admiral


Last summer was not good for insects in Finland, but mid September was warm enough for many flying bugs. Here are some images of Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta), one of the largest butterflies in Finland. I took those on 13 September in Mäntsälä, Southern Finland.

This was the second brood, just before most of the admirals migrate to south for more moderate winter climate. Only a few will stay over the winter and survive in Finland.
