Common Goldeneye in spring bliss

In March-April we can see Common goldeneye (Bucephala clangula, telkkä in Finnish) starting their nesting season in Finland. Most goldeneys spend the winter months in southern Baltic Sea and shores of the Gulf of Bothnia, but up to 20 000 stays in Finland round the year. The male goldeneye is a quite sizeable bird: about 50 cm long and up to 1400 grams. Females are slightly smaller.

I will post every week “Thursday Twitters”, pictures of birds mainly from
Finland and Southern Africa, occasionally also taken elsewhere.
The source of the text is most likely Wikipedia or similar online article.

The water’s a wonderful colour with the ripples and reflections. What a cute bird, it gives me back ache just to see. Nicely composed shot.
