Mouthful of delicacy

I took these pictures on 24th of June 2011 – today is 23rd five years later – in Mäntsälä, Finland. The model is a female European pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca, kirjosieppo in Finnish) collecting food – insects, berries – to feed the chicks.

I will post every week “Thursday Twitters”, pictures of birds mainly from
Finland and Southern Africa, occasionally also taken elsewhere.
The source of the text is most likely Wikipedia or similar online article.

Very nice. You’ve captured the alert intelligence and sharp eyes as the bird wonders if there’s another delectable morsel available before returning to the nest; in the third photo especially. It’s interesting that insects are usually dismissed as inedible for humans in the ‘West’, but they’re a delicacy in many countries. Excellent focus, as always.

    • Thanks again, Rigby! Here in Finland we have a rising trend to eat insects. What slows the trend is the legislation: food administration does not easily accept insects to be commercially sold for nutrition purposes. But that is changing.
