Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Pori Jazz 1972

Soul jazz saxophonist Cannonball Adderley‘s quintet was playing in Pori Jazz Festival on Saturday, July 15, 1972.  This was the first (and last?) visit of Cannonball Adderley in Finland. He died of a stroke three years later at the age of 46.

The other members of the quintet were his brother Nat Adderley, cornet (1931-2000), George Duke, piano (b. 1946), Walter Booker, bass (1933-2006) and Roy McCurdy, drums (b. 1936).

During the park concert in Kirjurinluoto Cannonball was not at his best. The history of Pori Jazz tells (in Finnish here) that the same night he joined the jam session in Teljänhovi restaurant, and made the whole audience wild with his furious play. His reputation was saved.

Pori Jazz was not the first visit of Cannonball Quintet in Finland. He had a concert at Kulttuuritalo during 60’s with Nat, Victor Feldman, Sam Jones and Louis Hayes. This concert was recorded by YLE and can be in YLE Areena. I was present in Pori but not in Kulttuuritalo. – Seppo Karttunen
