Anti-apartheid activist Ahmed “Kathy” Kathrada spent 18 years on this island prison of his totally 26 years of imprisonment 1963-1989. Later he served e.g. as the member of the South African parlament and an adviser for the president Nelson Mandela who also was an inmate in Robben Island (and later in Pollsmore Prison) the same years as Kathrada.
Ahmed Kathrada died yesterday, 28 March 2017 at the age of 87 years.

What a wonderful photograph, the cloud above the island ready to “weep” on it. The turquoise-green water crystal clear because of the cold. The unimaginative rectangular stacks of apartments like a futile barrage against the sea. And that lonely island! It shames me to realise that I was standing in almost this spot in 1973 but had no idea what was happening out there. I had never even heard of this man until today. We only knew what our governments wanted us to know. Today the internet allows us to glimpse the truth about the horrors of colonialism. But I fear it is too late. The 0.01% of the population who control the media, entertainment, food supply, governments and law enforcement, are so powerful they no longer have anything to fear from the truth.

In 1973 only very few new, understood – or cared – the deepness and darkness of apartheid. It took still 15 years for Mandela, Kathrada and others before they were released. – Unfortunately, in 2008 I didn’t have the time to visit Robben Island Museum, but still seeing it from the distance was important.

What a breathtaking view.. The color of water is just unbelievable. Hard to imagine from the photo that the island is the place of historical importance in South Africa.
